@beardedtechguy and myself are looking for someone to help us grow in every way possible. This includes our blog, our instance, our wiki, our Discord and our community in general.

We're looking for someone that is super active here on Mastodon and will continue to do so going forward.

We're looking for someone that is willing to talk about the instance, advertise the instance and recruit for the instance if possible. (cont...)

little protip: due to how posts federate there's no guarantee someone will see a link/video preview when they see your post, especially on small servers. this means that you'll probably want to add some kind of relevant description in the post where you're posting the link, like repeating the headline or quoting a relevant excerpt

activitypub.ghost.org/day-0/

At various points we revisited our old idea for networked publishing in Ghost and tested a few prototypes, but we were never sure how to make it scale; nor how many other platforms would ultimately adopt it. For all its promise, ActivityPub (like many open standards) seemed to generate products with user experiences that were often confusing and convoluted.

But something else happened in the intervening period between 2016 and 2024: People became increasingly fed up with the behavior of centralized platforms, and increasingly hungry for alternatives. The motivation for exploring and understanding new technologies, rough edges included, meaningfully increased.

In 2024, for the first time, it finally feels like we have a critical mass of people and platforms who are interested in rewilding the internet to bring back what we lost, and create something new.

In the past week alone, we've had conversations with Mastodon, Flipboard, The Verge, Buttondown, WriteFreely, and several co-authors of the ActivityPub spec. There's a palpable feeling that this just might be the year of thetintx-desktop the open web.

@daevien

LOL.

Yup, most of the features that I used on #mastodon are on #gotosocial and I've been really happy with this new instance. Gotosocial is way easier to manage since it's just one binary without a bunch of external parts (like Redis, PostgreSQL and Sidekiq). And backups are super simple since it's just an rsync of the directory (I'm using sqlite for the database, which is more than enough for a single-user instance). And... $4/mo Hetzner instance runs it just fine with a lot of headroom left over.

There are some features I hope it will gain in the future, but they're nothing big. A couple are auto expiry of my posts after X days; auto purge of remote posts that haven't been interacted with in Y days; editing of posts; and export of following list.

#phanpysocial has been an excellent front-end for gotosocial.

Does anyone have a very detailed and comprehensive guide on how to scale up a Mastodon server?

I'm pretty noobish to Linux but I can follow guides if they have commands and stuff. Though, the only guides I could find were very light on the commands for certain steps.

My Sidekiq has been getting backed up every now and then with thousands of jobs. Of course they eventually clear out but I'd like to just mitigate it by adding more processes or whatever because I'm not even using 50% of my server resources🤷‍♂️

Any help would be much appreciated.

PS. My server is currently backed up so if you reply to this, I probably won't see it for a bit.😬

It's such an exciting time for social media.

Fediverse is going near-mainstream due to wide adoption.

Bluesky now "unofficially" federates with the fantastic work of Ryan Barrett's BridgyFed!

Threads has one-way federation and claims to plan to fully federate soon enough.

Flipboard is actively working on Federation, some parts already working!

Nostr is federated using the Momostr Pink bridge which also bridges Threads.

The future of interconnected social media is now. Exciting times, we are in!😁

The whole small vs big instances argument is also exhausting, you're somehow wanting consent with federation and every interaction, but expect your instance to be slurping up data from other instances such that your small instance isn't "quiet".

Where's that consent model again?

(And there's ongoing work by a and others around replies collections & the management of them, as to ensure you can request full reply trees)

”But Mastodon also has [...] a lot on its plate including integration with Threads“

It's lines like this that makes me completely unable to take those calling for a hard fork of Mastodon seriously.

All Mastodon do for Threads is the same they for any fediverse developer having issues federating with them. (And there's certainly limits to that)

Along with perhaps writing more FEPs to standardize behaviour, which benefits *everyone*

”The recent confirmation that release 4.3 still won't make it easy for new instances to start with a blocklist that protects people from the nazis and TERFs that are active on the fediverse is a good example“

Yeah, because I closed the pull request for that a) because the code was an absolute mess, b) because one-time imports of moderation data are really terrible & only at all useful for DNI lists.

That's why I'm working on FIRES with NLNet funding.

@m@thias.hellqui.st

Just a quick comment on the latest Mastodon developments, as everyone seems to need to have an opinion.

I don’t think it is bad to have a board that has experience of certain technologies, or from certain companies.

In fact, if you try to navigate around, or out of, some of the things mentioned, like blockchain, AI or becoming like Twitter, whilst still identifying and possibly utilising the good/usable parts of those things, doing so with experienced people is a lot easier than for everyone else to learn things from scratch, or too late.

I think more focus should be put on the steering documents, plans and strategy going forward, as soon as they are published or becomes well-known. That will teach us more about the route Mastodon is actually taking.

Just my £0.02

And yes, that actually comes off as defending Eugen/Mastodon (something I’m not known for, and as you know I am not even using Mastodon myself) but…give it all some time to get some insight and facts before throwing a fit.
