Disco S5 Progenitor Scientists Lessons - Final List

Vellek, Lyrek, "Under the Twin Moons":

Jinaal Bix, Trill, "Jinaal":

Carmen Cho, ISS Enterprise, "Mirrors":

Hitoroshi Kreel, Halem'no, "Whistlespeak":

Marina Derex, The Eternal Gallery and Archive, "Labyrinths":
If you’re going to be the one to protect what the Progenitors left behind, you’ll need to know yourself. Be able to be honest with yourself. Especially with the things that are hard to look at. Fear, guilt. The things you may be vulnerable to. Most can’t admit those things to themselves. That you can is the only way you can be trusted to do the right thing with so much power.

Non-spoiler thoughts on Disco S5 E8 "Labyrinths":
The "tense and unexpected" nature of last week's episode continues into this week.
A fascinating and gorgeous setting for the episode shot at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto.
There will be crying.
More learned about the Breen.
Reno for the 2nd episode in a row!
Really incredible VFX work this week, as far as both ships and interiors of places.
An ending you will not see coming (or maybe you will). I definitely didn't.

How is the season over in two weeks?! Enjoy new Disco while you can. 😭

Disco S5 Ep7 SPOILERS

Well, the danger really ratcheted up this week. I think we have achieved the standard Star Trek: Discovery stakes!

I'm definitely liking the Breen as a villain here. I love how Primarch Ruhn is couching everything he does in tradition and honor, but his actual goal is just power. It isn't a vendetta against L'ak and Moll for betraying him, it's just how he can use L'ak that matters. He reminds me of General Kol.

I love L'ak's observation to Culber that it isn't finding common ground that makes Moll love him, she loves him BECAUSE he is different. So many layers in that moment! For one thing, Culber also knows something about loving someone who is quite different. For another, Moll and L'ak are an example of IDIC, in a twisted kind of way. For yet another, it highlights the tension between finding common ground and celebrating differences -- these two things go together very well, but they are not the same and are in fact sort of opposed to one another, which is paradoxical.

I was very surprised by L'ak's death. However, it really takes Moll's character to the next level. She is Bonnie without Clyde now, so what does she do? I will say this, she seems absolutely incapable of cutting her losses. Each time she loses a bet, she immediately goes double-or-nothing. She's clearly got some kind of half-baked plan to trick the Breen out of the Progenitor's technology and bring L'ak back to life. And suddenly it switches her from being the Federation's antagonist to an ally. She's got some kind of plan to beat the Breen, and now Discovery's got to figure out what it is. I love this development.

Book's arc this season has been interesting. His connection to Moll divides his loyalty, but also he's got to prove to Discovery's crew that they can trust him again. Watching him decide to help Paul figure out the clue when he would rather be hunting Moll was very interesting. But if the Progenitors' tech really can resurrect the dead, can it bring back all of Kwejian? If it can, how could Book possibly resist betraying Discovery again to help Moll get it?

It's great to see Nhan back, of course. I like the tension between her and Book. I like that Nhan is on guard against him because she knows Michael isn't. Nhan has always protected Michael from herself when Michael is too emotionally close to the situation (which is usually). Nhan isn't Michael's bestie, like Tilly, but she's a true friend.

No Saru again this week, alas, but it's great to see T'Rina. I supposed it's good that they aren't one of those couples that needs to do *everything* together. ;-)

Betazoids are certainly getting a lot of new mind powers in modern Trek -- first Deanna deadening Will's grief on PIC, now Dr. Derex putting a telepathic imprint on a physical object which can live on 800 years after her death!

I liked that Michael can recognize the parallel between Rayner's feelings about the Breen and her own feelings about the Klingons, and that she is willing to acknowledge that, even if he wasn't handling it perfectly, he was handling it better than she did.
