The internet and time spent online is often cited as one of the biggest contributing factors to low self esteem and poor mental health, but a new study has found the opposite to be true.
“Nearly everyone seems to think that internet-powered technologies are driving an epidemic of ill-being and mental health problems,” said lead study author Dr. Matti Vuorre, assistant professor of social psychology at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, in an email to @CNN.
“Our study of over two million individuals from 160+ countries runs contrary to this idea.” Here’s more on the findings.
Frank McCourt, the billionaire real estate mogul and former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, is currently working on a bid to buy TikTok, according to reports.

Google has announced that its “AI Overviews” search results have started to roll out to users in the U.S. today, replacing the most relevant articles on the web with an AI-generated answer to your query instead.
By the end of 2024, AI Overviews will appear at the top of results for 1 billion users, something Gartner is predicting will cause a 25% drop in traffic to the web from search by 2026. But what about all the businesses that rely on it, and what does the future hold for human-powered search? @caseynewton reports for Platformer.

If you remember a time when using floppy disks didn’t seem weird, you’re probably at least 30 years old. Floppy disks or diskettes emerged around 1970 and, for a good three decades or so, they were the main way many people stored and backed up their computer data.
However, it’s now been over a decade since the last floppy disc was made, and it wouldn’t even have enough capacity to store a modern smart phone picture. So why do some people still love using them? BBC Future speaks to some of the floppy disk faithful to find out.
The Google I/O keynote just ended — and as expected, it was packed to the brim with AI.
@theverge has all the details of everything announced, including the updates coming to Google’s Gemini AI models, and all the ways they’re being integrated into apps like Workspace and Chrome.
Watching #GoogleIO and there are some cool demonstrations of data center cloud computing, but there's also this fog of dystopia surrounding these demos.
The announcements for search are horrifying. Google is full mask off.
Phrases like "search for something, and we'll collect all this data for you" basically equates to:
"We sucked up ALL the data from people who really did the work, and we're going to give you the results of their hard work, but we wont take you to the site that generated the data. You can stay on the search page, and the site's traffic will plummet."
This is shocking.

Distrust over Chinese-owned tech brands operating in the U.S. continues to grow, with President Joe Biden blocking a Chinese-backed cryptocurrency mining firm from owning land near a Wyoming nuclear missile base.
Calling the proximity to the base a “national security risk”, the order forces the divestment of property operated as a crypto mining facility, and also requires certain equipment to be removed from the site too. Here’s more from AP.

The solar storm that brought the auroras to many parts of the world this weekend also broke vital GPS and precision farming functionality in tractors and agricultural equipment during a critical point of the planting season, reports @404mediaco.
One chain of John Deere dealerships even warned farmers that the accuracy of some of the systems used by tractors had been “extremely compromised,” and that farmers who planted crops during periods of inaccuracy would face problems when they go to harvest.
The outages have highlighted the vulnerability of modern tractors to satellite disruption, and the threat this places on our food supply — something experts have been warning about for years. Here’s more.

If you’ve been scrolling TikTok recently and wondered why some videos are muted, it’s probably because of the an ongoing spat between the platform and Universal Music Group, which removed the music of all the label’s artists.
Today, the two struck a “multi-dimensional licensing agreement” that will allow music from UMG’s artists to be used as TikTok audio once more. TikTok is also promising protections with respect to generative AI, including “a commitment on TikTok’s part to remove AI-generated music and improve artist and songwriter attribution,” reports @CNET.
Google has kicked off World Password Day by announcing that over 400 million users have used passkeys since the tech giant rolled them out, logging over one billion authentications between them.

This is truly one of the more baffling decisions I’ve seen in a long time. Tesla is a leader in charging infrastructure, to the degree that virtually every other carmaker is even adopting its standard.
Then Elon Musk laid off the entire Supercharger team.
https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/30/24145621/tesla-layoff-supercharger-ev-charging-nacs-elon-musk
Yes, every news article about a company laying off staff should be paired with a note on the company's profits, right there in the headline.
Barely two weeks have passed since Tesla initiated layoffs for at least 14,000 staff, and the company is now reportedly laying off hundreds more — including senior executives and the majority of its Supercharging team. But that may not be the end of it.
In an email sent to executives last night, Elon Musk said he wanted Tesla to be “absolutely hard core” about the cuts, stating even staff working underneath executives who “don’t obviously pass the excellent, necessary and trustworthy test” would also be out of a job. Here’s more from @theverge.

After failing to stop a bill that could ban it in the U.S., TikTok now faces two big hurdles — the U.S. judicial system and the Chinese government, reports @theverge
While ByteDance has promised to fight the ruling, which requires it to divest the app within a year, it won’t be an easy fight, with experts unsure how keen judges will be to weigh in on decisions of national security importance. If it fails, it will have to consider selling TikTok. But that’s not a decision it will be able to make alone — it’ll need the Chinese government’s permission.
