@mookie@lifeiswoohoo.com
it's me, hi. i'm the mookie, it's me.
i'm writing a fresh introduction for this new instance. something i haven't done for a while.
i'm a serial #fediverse instance creator (and destroyer) and have been doing this since 2018. many will already be familiar with my name or my avatar.
i'm a father of two awesome kids. i'm a huge fan of movies. i'm a gamer (#callofduty and #battlefield mostly). i'm a fan of #taylorswift. i eat to #run. i'm a huge #starwars and #startrek nerd. i'm a born and raised #engineer and have spent most of my career as a devops engineer and sre, though now i lead a most excellent team of devs and sres.
my permanent home is at https://ultramookie.com where i should be writing more blog posts and movie reviews.
As an #introvert I relate to this.
Not an introvert, but I get it.
Just a test to see where this screenshot of Akkoma with a Nord-theme actually ends up being visible. Feel free to ignore.
@mathias It showed up #gotosocial too!
@mathias Feeling free. Ignored.
@mookie to unplug the brain, I prefer "Is it cake?".
I've never heard of this, I need to look it up!
@mookie it's on Netflix. They're cake artists. They have to guess if it's cake or not and then make cakes similar to regular items. https://youtu.be/gpqcxEW7Q8s?si=tFY3IL1378oYj8AA
@eco_amandine Oh! I know this show, I think it's actually on my Watchlist. The name is generic and I can't always pin it to the show. I think I saw a preview of where they made purses.
@mookie Kitchen Stadium! Let the battle begin
@Fury Yeeeees! Allez cuisine!
@mookie If you didn't vote Iron Chef, are you even Asian? haha
@Fury @mookie It's my favorite because they respect the challengers. The challenger is under pressure, but is not belittled, mistakes are treated as a normal thing even professionals do when out of their element, and it's never make or break for their career. Just two really good chefs having a friendly competition.
Although I never understood that grin when biting into a raw pepper as if it's an apple.
And, much as I love Alton Brown, the US version is a pale imitation.
@WearsHats I love the capsicium/pepper bite and his grin. I am not sure I can explain why I love it so much - HELP ME OUT STEVE @mookie
@mookie UK master chef. all the American ones seem to be edited by Michael Bay.
So, I'm curious about exactly how much of Fedi is blocking threads.
Boost for reach please. So the poll gets good info.
PS. This isn't a debate post or anything. Just want info if you're willing to share. Thanks!
Edit: The poll is officially over (editing reactivates it but I'm not acknowledging it). The estimated counts are as follows:
Around 740 users AREN'T blocking Threads from this sample size.
Around 415 users ARE blocking Threads from this sample size.
In hindsight, I should have made the poll longer so it could spread around more.
I will do another poll when Threads updates their code to allow replies. That poll will be longer and I will re-edit this post again with the link to that post, so you can re-vote at that time, if you'd all be so kind. 😅
Thanks again, have a good day.
#Fediverse #Threads #Meta #Fedi #Mastodon #SocialMedia #Polls
I am currently blocking threads: | 420 |
I am currently not blocking threads: | 735 |
Psst... @tchambers if you'd be so kind to boost this, I bet we'd get the info we're looking for.😏😉or at least a decent picture.
@BeAware I don't block threads but I won't follow there either. I do see some useful stuff others boost from there. But I will block it if it becomes problematic.
@BeAware
The instance I'm in isn't blocking threads 😞, I'm blocking it on my account with a block list 😄. Although there where a poll put up by my instance's admins and most of the users wanted to federate with threads, so that's that 😐. But nothing is stooping me to act on my on, if I want to block the hole "threads.net" domain I can do that. 😌
@light This is functionally just a mute. They will still be able to see/interact/reply to your posts, you just won't see them. But it's the only real choice a normal user has, so that's what I am counting.🤷♂️
@BeAware
Yeah, I know it's not as powerful as if it was blocked by the instance. The only other thing I can do is migrate to another instance that blocks it. But other than I really don't like my instance is federated with threads I like it here. I don't think I would migrate just yet.
I don't know how to!
@raineyday The only way you can, is if you search a threads profile or see a post from a threads user and click "..." And "block this domain"
This is functionally just a mute. They will still be able to see/interact/reply to your posts, you just won't see them. But it's the only real choice a normal user has, so that's what I am counting.
If you want to do it immediately, here's Zuck's account @zuck
@BeAware voted Not currently, my server blocks them, but i’d be willing to give them a chance otherwise, i hope my server gives more flexibility regarding that in the future.
@tshirtman I meant it to be by intention. So, that works. You can always migrate. It's a little messy, but it works for the most part..😬
@BeAware I am, but not sure if my instance is
@4d3fect That's okay. I meant it by intention. Just so you're knowledgeable, the "block this domain" button is just a mute. Any domain that's federated that's blocked this way can still see your posts, interact, and reply to them. You just won't be able to see it. Kinda like standing in a room of hungry bears with a blindfold on. If you're scared of hungry bears, your best move is to get out of the room.
@BeAware got it, thanks for the tip.
@SuperMoosie @4d3fect I meant for users intentions. Also this is more of a complete picture I think.... https://fba.ryona.agency and type in the top box threads.net
@BeAware I know there’s a LOT of pushback on threads and some of it being legitimate, however I’ve not seen 1 single post from the “deluge of fascist corporations and users” that was overwhelmingly hyped would happen. I know my instance isn’t blocking Threads so honestly wondering when the “big deal” will finally happen if at all.
@BeAware I would never be so arrogant as to make that decision on behalf of my users.
@mike You could do a poll, but there would never be a way to make sure every user votes. So I think this is the best way to think. Also make sure to have "authorized fetch" on and hope that Threads honors it, because if it's either off or they don't honor it, users "block this domain" will still be a mute. But I don't think bigger instances have it on either...🤷♂️
The instance I use does not appear to block Threads.
I was able to search, find, and click through the link to it on this page:
@johnlogic Are you against this decision? If so, you can "mute" them by clicking "..." And clicking "block this domain". This is the only way users can actually decide for themselves. Do note that depending on "authorized fetch", it might be just a mute. If you do this I'd recommend voting "I currently block Threads"🤷♂️
@BeAware People hated threads until they realized joe biden has an account on there(hes litterally never going to interact or knows what the fediverse is) then they loved it and said its the future
Beamship hasn't started yet but we haven't seen any garbage from there yet. Our group has talked about blocking and agreed that we will if the GIGO starts (old computer term: Garbage In, Garbage Out) 😂
@BeAware I'm on 3 different instances and all 3 have banned threads, otherwise I would have myself
@MikeImBack Then vote "I currently block Threads" 🤷♂️
I'm blocking it because meta sux.
And they can keep their ads, cp, and influencers on their own side of the internet.
Has anyone looked at that cesspool lately?
@maddad Well, Fedi has its FAIR share of CP, but yeah, this isn't meant to be a morality war or anything. I was just wondering🤷♂️
oh, and it took less than a week for it to get suspended lol
@maddad I can beat that! I registered and was suspended when I logged in then I was able to login 25 hours later, messed around for 30 minutes and suspended again🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@BeAware I still have not, because I haven't met anyone from there or at least I'm not aware of any.
@BeAware How to block threads server on personal account?
@BeAware Seems I did block it long ago
@BeAware Hope my boosting this helped! .....But I would note not statistically a random sample of fediverse users... I think to really do this one would literally need to do a true intentionally randomized sample across the whole fedi, and do all the things real world pollsters do to avoid sampling bias...
@tchambers It totally DID help a ton! Yea, I do get that though. I was hoping for at least double the votes honestly, but it is what it is. I really wanted to see the "user intention" part of it, because no matter what the admins choose or think, everyone has their own opinions and that's the important part. We may see 700 instances "blocking threads", but that's not a user number of how many actually agree with those decisions and such.
Unfortunately, as you said, the sample size is too small and niche for it to have any meaning. But it was a good attempt and interesting nonetheless.🤷♂️
@tchambers All we can do is wait and see, when replies are turned on, really how much cross interaction there will be. It'll be interesting to say the least...I have hopes. I don't know if they're high hopes or low hopes, but hopes are there. 🤣
@tchambers also, in hindsight. I should have set it for a longer time. Either you or I can do another poll when replies are enabled and make it for a week or something, that way it has more time to spread around. Bad decision on my part. That might help to get a better sample size.
Less than an hour left on this poll!
If you don't mind answering an anonymous poll about your Threads Federation opinion, please do so before the time runs out!
@BeAware just voted.
@eatyourglory Thanks, friend. Appreciate it. Unfortunately, in hindsight, I should have made the expiration longer so it could spread around more. Therefore, this sample size doesn't really mean anything since it's so small. Maybe once they turn on replies, I'll do a longer one and maybe get a better sample size.
@BeAware you totally should do that! will you block threads?
@eatyourglory I will not.
I am of a different mindset than most here.
I did come here to get away from Musk and Meta originally, but I don't have any false sense of privacy on the internet like some seem to have here. Then, there's those that just don't understand exactly what data Meta can get from federating, which has been where at least a bit of the fearmongering has come from.
People seem to think that they'll be able to "sell your data" the same way they do if you were using their platform and that's just absolutely not the case. There ARE some nuances about what they can do and will probably do, but I see those as the trade-off of being able to have access to so many users while I'm in my own little safe space.
One of these things is simply stuff like ads being shown next to my posts on Threads for threads users to see. This doesn't bother me because if Fedi is successful, this has to be okay. People and companies need to make money and ads are just the most "known" way to do that.🤷♂️
@BeAware Totally agree with you. If I wanted, I could spin up my own instance and start storing millions of fediverse posts, and then sell the data in them. We can't actually know if people are already doing that.
@eatyourglory Facts. There ARE those that are doing that or planting the seeds to do that and the Fediverse has already accepted them (see NewsMast)🤷♂️ it's weird as hell.
@BeAware I don't know much about NewsMast. Could you clue me in?
@eatyourglory So, they currently are an "organization" that is "backed by a UK nonprofit" (citation needed🙄) that have a mastodon app and instance that has curated lists based on topics. These lists are just content from other users getting boosted to them. All this is fine and dandy....
Except for the fact that when it was first starting, they admitted that their goal is to have an app that is basically a "news" site/app with no need for login or user interaction strictly using the content from these lists. So basically, they're making their own app that uses Fedi content without your approval and you will like it, because they're being shady and making it seem like that's not what they're doing now.
I was completely blocked from them when they admitted this because I immediately started brigading against this because I HATE double standards...
Yet here we are, their plan probably hasn't changed and they most likely deleted that admission post.🤦♂️🤬
@BeAware I didn't even know they had an app. That's... at the least, concerning.
@eatyourglory Yep... newsmast.org the app is pretty "front and center" 🤦♂️ (technically on the left if you're on PC, but you get the point...)
@BeAware I've just found this out & am not very happy about it
Anyone who personally blocked threads.net hasn't actually blocked it, they've muted it
Only instance admins can block another instance (defederation)
Muting stops threads.net posts appearing in your federated (world) timeline, but you can still see them if you look& afaik your public posts will appear in the threads.net world tl
So if your instance admin hasn't defederated threads.net their users can see your posts
@BeAware See https://social.growyourown.services/@FediTips/112237165783924010 for more info
@staringatclouds Yep. I've been saying this for a few months now.🤷♂️ Sorry, friend. Your only true way is to migrate to an instance that blocks them.
@BeAware It doesn't help when the web interface calls it a block when it manifestly isn't
@BeAware
Something I want to point out, this poll is giving an incomplete picture. The majority of people are on servers that aren't blocking threads, because most of mainstream Fedi isn't blocking threads. The majority of servers, from what I can tell though, are blocking Threads.
This is because the vast majority of the servers which are blocking threads are the smaller more niche servers, the queer/black/female/jewish/muslim hangouts and safe spaces.
This goes down to this concept I keep saying that different instances have different goals and strategies: the instances that set themselves up for massive userbases are the instances that are less likely to block a server the size of Threads.
@Raccoon Tell me you didn't read the post without telling me you didn't read the post.👍
"In hindsight, I should have made the poll longer. When threads starts federating replies, I will make a new poll and edit this with that link so you can all vote again"
@Raccoon Also, no, there's only 700+ instances blocking threads. That's 5-7% of all instances.🤷♂️
@BeAware
Interesting... That is far lower than the amount I've been seeing... If that is the case, perhaps it would be good if more servers blocked them, to give more users that option.
@Raccoon This parses every known instances blocklist. The instances are pulled from instances.social which is pretty up to date.
https://fba.ryona.agency/?domain=Threads.net
It only can parse public blocklists but any instance that is worth moving to, has a public blocklist.🤷♂️
@BeAware
Actually, a lot of the smaller, more insular instances, don't have public blocklists. They also don't have public signups.
@Raccoon that's my point...how can someone who wants to block Threads realistically migrate to an instance that it doesn't know blocks threads and doesn't have open sign ups? Those instances aren't relevant for this kinda thing as nobody would know or want to go there.
@BeAware
Agreed, but they are legitimate and real instances. The fact that people can't find and move to them makes me second guess the idea that not blocking Threads is giving users options, as they don't seem to have many options to avoid it.
Just the other day, I was looking through the other North American tech servers, and very few are blocking Threads.
@Raccoon yea, but there ARE instances that block them that can handle the extra traffic. There really doesn't need to be a TON of servers that block them, as long as the ones that do, can reasonably handle an influx of users.🤷♂️
@BeAware
I'm not referring to whether server staff can handle them, I'm referring to giving users a choice as to whether they are on a server that blocks Threads: some users would rather the Facebook company have zero access to them. That's a legitimate desire, and requires the server to do a full block.
Maybe this is something that needs to be looked into by a group of servers. I will bring it up with some of the other North American tech server staffs.
@Raccoon There's 700+ instances fully blocking threads, that link I sent, lists all the publically available ones...🤷♂️I'm sure they can handle new users. The users will be fully safe from threads if they migrate to any of the 700+ instances on that list.👍
To be clear, I didn't mention "staff" anywhere...😬if the actual server infrastructure can't handle new a lot of new users, I'd be hesitant to tell anyone to migrate.
@mookie Like, right now? 😊
Those worried Threads might scrape the Fedi for AI training data should rest assured that EVERY bit of the public Fedi is ALREADY being scraped and used by all the AI players. Because it is free and public, compared to this:
"Rates vary by buyer and content type, but Braga said companies are generally willing to pay $1 to $2 per image, $2 to $4 per short-form video and $100 to $300 per hour of longer films. The market rate for text is $0.001 per word."
It is a miracle that the guy is even married 😂 here is advice for you, keep tech discussion limited for dev bros. You will be happy. The wife will be happy. https://www.reddit.com/r/vim/comments/1bvua29/my_wife_was_unimpressed_by_vim_please_advise/ #vim #unix #linux #opensource
@nixCraft I've always thought that "vi or emacs" was the programmer's equivalent of "boxers or briefs"
Now they have "boxer briefs". Is that like Intellij?
I guess I don't see the appeal, aside from bragging rights. 'micro' is the editor I expect in this day and age. I'd be happy to learn why I'm wrong.

Do you agree? #linux
@nixCraft I need Anger Management for Windows, and Drugs. Tranquilizers mostly
@nixCraft Sorry. I do not agree. While I am sick of Windows, it's not that difficult to use. I'm a Mac guy, and the price-to-value proposition of entry-level Macs is much more affordable & capable now. I'm also a Linux guy, and there are loads of distros now that just work out of the box, like Mint, Pop, and Fedora. Every OS has its quirks and foibles, but they are a lot closer in reliability than they used to be. Now, security is a different matter, and Windows, by far, sucks the worst.
@nixCraft no skill required if never open the terminal 🤷♂️
@nixCraft I'm not sure if I'd qualify "pasting search results into random config files and praying to Linus Stallman until it works" as "skills"... But if we're calling it that, I guess I've got skills.
(But not a laptop that sleeps correctly)
@nixCraft
For Windows you need a virus scanner.
For Apple you need voodoo.
For Linux you need skilled friends on social media.
@nixCraft
For Windows you need knowledge on how to REGEDIT, add to PATH, and search for BSOD error codes
For Mac you need money and no sense of skepticism
For Linux you need to only remember two or three Terminal commands
@nixCraft nope
Nope
Nope.
There're two million grandparents using linux their kids set up, but never go to any linux sites to be counted, just doing banking email and social. And they never notice, its doesnt crash three times a week, isnt filled with viruses, so kids and grandkids dont have to drive over to Nana's house to reboot and remove malware.
If you need it to work
Linux
If you like being watched
Windows
If you like paying too much
Apple
@nixCraft as a long-suffering Windows user (don't hit), I'd say all that's missing from the Windows entry is "and a willingness to string the OS up in a root cellar and flog it until it complies" 😆
Also
The need to learn some stuff when switching to linux from windows is SMALLER than the stuff you need to learn to switch from NT to 95 to 10 to 11
@nixCraft Well, I spent way less money on the Mac than I did my Linux laptop.
@nixCraft patience for windows?
@nixCraft kind of bad vibes and likely deprecated. We should take care to get people into "I can do it!" instead of celebrating ourselves for "skills". I think, for usual computer stuff at home, Linux runs out of the box already. It gets tricky, when talking about programming, cloud services, printer/scanner or gaming, but for each thing, at least one smart community yet has a discussion for.
@nixCraft I’m afraid there’s some truth to that.
@nixCraft All computer usage requires skills.

Your Roku TV could soon show you #ads every time you hit pause — even on other devices or apps.
#Roku recently filed a patent for a technology that would let it inject ads into third-party content—like an #Xbox game or #Netflix movie—using an #HDMI connection
The patent describes sophisticated ways to detect when you’ve paused your content and analyze what you’re watching to show relevant ads. #Privacy

@paul Yeah, and there is a solution to that. ⚒️
@Jason844 can you imagine I use Roku TV for my computer monitor and that's about it. So if that's implemented then they're going to continuously scan my computer for what I'm doing so that I can send me ads. I'm about over Roku And I've been with them since it was known as the YouTube box, a few years shy of 20 years.
@paul joke's on them, I sometimes get so frustrated, I just turn it off. I always mute the ads too, and walk away. Take that, madafakin' corporate.
@paul Further reason to use an Apple TV and nothing else. Even if you’re Android exclusive. It’s just the apps with no BS. Clean interface. And Apple TV (the app) is a great aggregator of your streaming services, except Netflix which refuses to play ball. Otherwise it’s how a smart TV should be
@paul if this keeps up, I may need to hack together my own media streaming box to avoid all the ads

@flargh @dmoren What part of it sucked? The remote? The SoCs haven’t sucked in years. If Apple wanted, they could have been running near current-gen HD console games but as far as I can tell haven’t tried to get much more software beyond what was on iOS.
Given that Microsoft currently is struggling to move gaming hardware despite having most popular titles (Fortnite!) Apple has a long road ahead if they’re going to become a player.
The fact that you can follow the president of the United States (@potus) from your Mastodon account instead of being forced to have an X or Threads account for it is a huge W in my book.
